Prom season!

Well, my Zoe went to prom with a friend from grade 12 this past Thursday. She looked just beautiful and the group got together before the prom at someone's house. I told her I wanted t come and take some pictures. While being discouraged... I decided I wold go anyway! I am glad I did. They looked so great. They were full of anticipation and excited about going. As a group they rented a limo and this is how they went to the party. They were all well dressed and what struck me was how grown up they all looked. I took this picture of Zoe. Isn't it the greatest? Time is going so fast. I just want to hold on and make it go slower... Then again, life is an exciting adventure for her and to watch her grow up into a self confident and pretty young woman makes me proud to be her mom. I just lover her to pieces!!

Bead and Button

In 2 weeks Bead and Button starts in Milwaukee. I am at a conference in Chicago the week prior and so am renting a car, taking a few days off and meeting a friend there. I booked one class with Sheri Haab and Robert Danczik and will check out the vendors. I believe there are approximately 200.... OHOH, this could be dangerous!!

Beauty

All I can think of when I see a morning haze like this one at 6 am at the cottage is beauty.... Add to that the colour and the fragrance of lilacs, and you have perfection! (Well, John disagrees as he is allergic to the lilacs and wants to cut them off. Nothing a little antihistamine can't fix in my opinion!)

More travels: Miami

More travels. Yes, it keeps on going! This time I am in Miami in South Beach across the bridge. It is an interesting place and I have not been here before so lots to see. One thing that is the major theme is the beach and beach goers. The weather is hot and humid. Some of my friends would be unhappy with this the entire time, others that walk and lie on the beach here, clearly adore it. It is less glamorous than I thought it was. A bit seedy even. Yet we are having a good time. There is a lot of original Art Deco here and it makes for a very interesting place. The beach is beautiful and the sound of the ocean never bores me! I do wonder what the incidence rate of skin cancer is though...

Popular trends in jewelry

For a long time I had a hard time appreciating found obect jewelry. It seemed  junky and I didn't get it. It wasn't until I took several classes with Susan Lennart Kazmer that I changed my view. Susan described her vision and her approach to her pieces and it was just so different. She is a truly wonderful person and in my view a great artist. Over the past year or so, found object jewelry has become popular. In fact so popular that now every magazine, every store every show has found object classes and stores and it seems that the trend is just that. I guess this is how trends go, and everyone has to do what they want. Yet, I cannot help but feel that when the trend takes over and artists such as Susan now are all over all popular jewelry stores, show and publication, the "specialness" disappears. While I am happy that her business is thriving, it seems to me that business truly has take over the artistic aspect. Good for her from a business perspective. http://susan-lenart-kazmer.blogspot.com/
For me though it has reached a point that it is now less of a special art form and I do regret that. It is now available in Michaels, under the name Industrial Chic... :

What do you think? Am I off the wall? After all, we all need to make a living...

Encrusted viking choker

I started this necklace in Houston at "Adorn Me" in Diana Frey's class and you know how it goes. If you don't finish it in class, you often don't really finish it... So, I decided today was the day to complete the project and it turned out just beautiful.

Happy Mother's Day

For All Mothers

This is for all the mothers who have sat up all night
With sick toddlers in their arms, wiping up barf laced
With Oscar Mayer wieners and cherry Kool-Aid saying,
"It's OK honey, Mommy's here."
Who walk around the house all night with their babies
When they keep crying and won't stop.
This is for all the mothers who show up at work with
Spit-up in their hair and milk stains on their blouses
And diapers in their purse.
For all the mothers who run carpools and make cookies and
Sew Halloween costumes. And all the mothers who DON'T.
This is for the mothers who gave birth to babies
They'll never see. And the mothers who took
Those babies and gave them homes.
This is for all the mothers who froze their buns
Off on metal bleachers at football or soccer games
Friday night instead of watching from cars,
So that when their kids asked, "Did you see me?"
They could say, "Of course, I wouldn't have
Missed it for the world," and meant it.
This is for all the mothers who sat down with their
Children and explained all about making babies
.And for all the mothers who wanted to but just couldn't.
For all the mothers who read "Goodnight, Moon"
Twice a night for a year.
And then read it again. "Just one more time."
This is for all the mothers who taught their children to
Tie their shoelaces before they started school.
And for all the mothers who opted for Velcro instead.
This is for all the mothers who teach their sons to
Cook and their daughters to sink a jump shot.
This is for all mothers whose heads turn automatically
When a little voice calls "Mom?" in a crowd,
Even though they know their own off spring are at home.
This is for all the mothers who sent their kids to school
With stomach aches, assuring them they'd be just FINE
Once they got there, only to get calls from the school nurse
an hour later asking them to please pick them up. Right away.
This is for mothers whose children have gone astray,
Who can't find the words to reach them.
For all the mothers who bite their lips sometimes until they
Bleed - when their 14 year olds dye their hair green.
What makes a good Mother anyway?
Is it patience? Compassion? Broad hips?
The ability to nurse a baby, cook dinner, and sew a button
On a shirt, all at the same time? Or is it heart?
Is it the ache you feel when you watch your son
Or daughter disappear down the street, walking to
School alone for the very first time?
The jolt that takes you from sleep to dread, from bed to
Crib at 2 A.M.
To put your hand on the back of a sleeping baby?
The need to flee from wherever you are and hug your child
When you hear news of a fire, a car accident, a child dying?
For all the mothers of the victims of all these school
Shootings, and the mothers of those who did the shooting.
For the mothers of the survivors, and the mothers who
Sat in front of their TVs in horror, hugging their child who
Just came home from school, safely.
This is for mothers who put pinwheels and teddy bears
On their children's graves.
This is for young mothers stumbling through
Diaper changes and sleep deprivation.
And mature mothers learning to let go.
For working mothers and stay-at-home mothers.
Single mothers and married mothers.
Mothers with money, mothers without.
This is for you all.
Happy Mother's Day

Chicago

I am in Chicago and just love this city. It is beautiful with stunning architecture, restored old buildings, amazing sculptures and act across the city, a waterfront, museums. If you ever have a chance , go and explore. Many conferences are here as the conference centre is one of the biggest. Today, at the conference, the keynote speaker was Al Gore, who spoke about climate change and when you look at what happened in Tennessee, there will be more floods like that due to the rising of the sea level. Al Gore is an excellent speaker and communicator. With people like him, we may get the message out that it truly is an urgent matter.
Then I went for a walk and while in Bloomingdale's an old lady fell and broke her wrist, in a nasty way. I stayed to help her until the ambulance came. Poor thing. Let's just say it was an eventful and memorable day!

More Viking Knit

On one of my travels in the last few days I was on a plane to Montreal where I met a lovely couple from Alberta, on their way to France. They were intrigued by my efforts to make another viking weave bracelet. We chatted for quite a while and I managed to finish another piece long enough for another bracelet. The lady like the sample I was wearing so much that she mentioned she would contact me when she is back. I hope so. It would be fun to send it to her after she saw with how much pleasure I worked at it!

A red wedding dress

A friend of mine indicated she had never seen a red wedding dress. I told her she clearly had never seen mine.... John and I got married in medieval style in 2001 in a beautiful old castle, from the year 1000 in Holland. I didn't want a white dress and in fact white was the colour of mourning then so, I chose red. My sister made this dress and you see a picture of all my brothers and sisters and mom and another one of my mom and I. There were 75 people and we all were dressed in the medieval style. So there you go, not as rare as you thought!
